Norwalk, CT – City officials are working closely with partners at the state and federal levels, as well as partners in Norwalk, to monitor and respond to COVID-19, the 2019 novel Coronavirus. Mayor Rilling provided the following Norwalk-area specific updates regarding COVID-19 coronavirus as of 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, 2020:
- Since yesterday, there are 87 new positive cases in Norwalk, bringing the total positive reported cases in Norwalk to 226. A death of a Norwalk resident was also reported. Now, five residents have died as a result of coronavirus. In Fairfield County, the number of new positive cases went from 908 to 1,245. The age and sex of these individuals will not be released. The public is asked to continue to take precautions as community spread is likely happening across the state.
- Mayor Rilling issued three critical emergency orders which become effective at 8 p.m. on March 30, 2020 and will remain in place until further notice. Those orders restrict vehicular access to city parks and beaches, and cut occupancy rates for businesses in half. More details can be found here.
- Norwalk Public Schools announced that starting Monday, March 30 and until further notice, meals for student ages 2-18 can be picked up at 10 food centers across Norwalk from noon to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. Locations and more information can be viewed here.
- Mayor Rilling sent a CodeRED Emergency Alert message earlier in the day in English and Spanish. This service is opt-in, meaning members of the public have to sign up if they wish to receive messages. City officials encourage everyone to sign up at norwalkct.org/codered.
- The 2020 Census is continuing to move ahead. Multiple notices have been sent to every household in Norwalk. Officials encourage everyone living in Norwalk to complete the Census. The 2020 Census can be completed online. More information available is here.
- Results from a recently launched Community Organization Survey continue to come in. Mayor Rilling encourages area nonprofits to please submit their information and details. Members of the public can also view the results to be connected to groups providing assistance or looking for volunteers. More information is at norwalkct.org/citynews.
“In the last 24 hours, we’ve had a 60 percent increase in cases and we now have over 200 positive cases. We’ve unfortunately also had another resident die because of this virus. I am saddened by this news, and I wish peace to their family and loved ones in this difficult time,” Mayor Rilling said. “This is a serious public health crisis and extreme measures are necessary. Otherwise, our health care system is going to be overloaded and that means more people getting sick and more people dying – not just from coronavirus, but from heart attacks, strokes, and other serious medical issues that require attention.”
